Canelli

A sparkling pearl of Monferrato

Canelli: historic cellars and romantic views

You mention Canelli and your nose tingles.

This town is, in fact, the home of Spumante (Italy's national sparkling wine) and the cradle of the Classic Method, which was introduced here in the mid-19th century by Carlo Gancia.

The landscape is a living testament to this ancient tradition, showcasing a tapestry of rolling hills adorned with meticulously tended vineyards that are a sight to behold.

The Coppo and Contratto Underground Cathedrals

The Underground cathedrals are cellars dug deep into the earth. The constant temperature of these spaces makes them an ideal place to store exceptional wines, enhancing their aromas and characteristics. Admire the ancient seabed geological stratifications inside and discover the unique manual processing technique that gives these wines their distinctive character. Finally, enjoy a glass of sparkling wine, a true reflection of the area.

Canelli, world-famous for its Underground Cathedrals - historic cellars carved into the tuff that wind their way beneath the town for kilometres -is also a place for romantic walks.

As you walk along the Sternìa, also known as the "Street of Love", a steep cobbled street connecting the old town to the hill above, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city and vineyards. These views are particularly magical at sunset, when the soft light creates a truly enchanting atmosphere.

To visit Canelli is to immerse oneself in a unique experience where the allure of the past meets the beauty of the present; it is a journey through the scents of the land, the charm of underground cathedrals and the cosiness of gastronomic traditions.

The Bosca and Gancia Underground Cathedrals

In Canelli, Bosca and Gancia complete the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Underground Cathedrals. The former is renowned for its long-standing family tradition, which continues to this day and embodies the innovations of each generation. Of particular interest is the exhibition path relating to the flood of 1994, when the entire community came together to help restore the wine cellars. Gancia, on the other hand, was born out of Carlo Gancia's entrepreneurial spirit. After studying in Champagne, France, he launched the company with his brother. Initially based in Chivasso, the company then moved to its permanent headquarters in Canelli, where it continued to experiment with the Classic Method.
